Saturday

Lucas and Aunt Abi
Don't mind the creepy eyes - this was taken with Jesse's iPhone that flashes a blinding light just before taking a photo.  This is Lucas and me in our first picture.  He's in his THIRD outfit of the day and I'm in my SECOND outfit since he had peed on me just before this, then spit up all over his SECOND outfit.  Aaaaah, babies.  And this one - he's tiny.  All of his clothes are way too big - and they're the newborn size.  This is good for knitting though - quicker projects!  I started on a sweater vest for him for Christmas today.

We had a fun day with Jesse, Lindsey and Lucas.  They came over and we made homemade pizzas.  Prior to their arrival I had a blissful morning of coffee, chatting with Beth (old roommate),  cleaning and grocery shopping.  It was like I was a normal person.

As the pizzas were cooking we had a mini photo shoot.  The lighting was my studio lighting that I bought.  We found a couple of keepers.

(Lucas's shirt says "Programmed to Love")

All said it was a good day.  Then we headed out to downtown for an Emergency Medicine get-together.  There were only a few residents there and some attendings and it was  a fun night with good food.  We called it quits early though since I'm on call tomorrow morning.

So I'm going to spend the rest of the night catching up on Project Runway and going to bed early in my nice, clean sheets that my husband is putting on my bed right now!

Oh yeah - since we were talking about how tiny Lucas is - I tried on my "not-fit-for-a-normal-human" sweater and IT FITS HIM!!  So cute (Lindsey says it's too girly or I would have sent it with him!)

Softball is Over!

One way or another Bry is done with softball tonight.  He had a 7:45 game and if he wins he has a 9:45 game.  Otherwise he'll be home soon so I can see him before I go to bed.  I'm a little happy that softball is over - although I didn't mind enjoying the warm summer nights knitting and cheering him on.

I had a blissful night home alone.  I got some knitting done and was able to make some baby announcements up too, as well as a Save the Date for my cousin.  I love it when I have little projects to work on.  I am currently watching a Milwaukee Public TV special on animal photographers so I'm also learning something non-medical.

So for knitting projects here's what I've got going on:

1. Pink sweater for Liza - Christmas?
2. Blue sweater
3. Scarf for myself with Wisconsin grown Alpaca yarn from State Fair.
4. Lindsey's Pink Mittens
5. Tea Pot for Pearl

Relatively few projects, for me, that is.  I am going to try to get at least a few done this week/weekend.  Come Wednesday I'm a "free woman" - free from call that is.  I start a month in the Emergency Department.  I have something like 14 shifts for the month - a whole week of vacation!  Looking forward to the lighter schedule and catching up on some real life things.

Life and Death

The past 7 days have been pretty busy for us.  I am on day 9 of 12 in a row days working and am getting pretty tired.  I am waking up by 4:30 or 5:00 everyday and into work by 5:45 at the latest.  My days consist in seeing my patients (some of whom are actually recognizing me as their doctor!), writing orders, re-writing orders when pharmacy tells me to, talking to nurses, talking to families, running around and getting a lot of paperwork done.

The new niece and nephew have kept us busy keeping in touch with family.  I went out to Jesse and Lindsey's house tonight to check on Lucas.  He's a cutie-patootie even if he's still a little bit yellow.  He had his first photo shoot in an attempt to get a birth announcement made.  He's pretty photogenic for a boy.  The whole 2 hours I was there he was wide awake and looking around - good head control too.  He is also very content and only had a few weak protests at the camera.....secretly I think he enjoys the attention.  I'm going to see him tomorrow too when Lindsey has a date with SUSHI that has been 9 months coming!  I'm going to get her (and myself) a HUGE selection of sushi and we'll pig out while Bry takes care of Lucas and eats his rice with a fork.

This week also marked the first death of one of my patients as a physician.  While it wasn't my first time performing CPR, it is still quite an experience when it is necessary.   We truly "tried everything" for this patient but there was literally nothing more to do.  It was a pretty stressful event and while I learned a lot I recognized how hard these times are going to be for me.

There is a lot of learning going on.  I've been able to perform a couple of procedures - something I really enjoy.

Finally I have some Knitting Knews updates.  Since I got my camera back I was able to take some photos of some of the projects I've finished.  Here goes:
This is Kyle's Christmas Hat.  I love the color combinations!  It's another pattern from Itty Bitty Hats.
This is a yellow hat that I knitted while at work.  I tried to knit a star for it but it turned out more like a flower.  So this one is for Liza.

 THE ELEPHANT HAT!!!
This is Lucas's Halloween hat.  I LOVE it.  It is all my own pattern - of which I am really proud.  (Like the grammar, Emily?)
I am still debating about adding some eyes and a tuft of hair.  I will play around with it before October.

So that is the long awaited update from us this week.  We're heading to Minnesota to meet Liza this weekend and be at her Baptism.  We are blessed and honored to be 2 of her Godparents.  This evens out the boy and girl Godchildren that I have. (2 and 2!)  I believe this is Bry's first time as a Godparent.  I'm going to have to run to Northwestern Publishing House to get a gift before Thursday.

I'd also like to thank Jesse and Lindsey for leaving a comment.  They were pretty proud of that fact tonight.  I'd also like to thank them for letting me partially blind Lucas with my flash......and there's more of that to come!

First Overnight Call

So I survived my first overnight call as a doctor - and so did all my patients!

The night was actually pretty slow and I was able to knit an entire baby hat during the day!  However, the early morning was a little more eventful and I ended up giving the hat to a pregnant STAT nurse who really helped me out with a complicated patient.  She's due in November with a girl so it was perfect!

I am really looking forward to getting my cameras back this week - I'm almost done with another sweater thanks to Bry's double-header softball games on Tuesday.

It's hard not seeing Bry for 36 hours at a stretch now - we've become accustomed to seeing each other and I kinda like him.  This whole living together alone thing is really nice!

Tomorrow I'm on call again for Trauma.  I doubt that a Friday night in August will be uneventful - plus State Fair started today.  Bry and I plan on going to the Fair on Saturday and Sunday.  We're also going to go to a Brewer's game on Wednesday - it's Stitch and Pitch at Miller Park so I won't be the only one knitting!

I will work on posting the photos soon - have a good weekend and stay safe!

(Please wear helmets on motorcycles and seatbelts in cars ALL the time!)

End of Month 1

So I officially finished my first month of residency.  It was pretty light - work wise, but I still feel like I learned a lot.  Still a long ways to go though.

Tomorrow I start Trauma Surgery for 30 days.  Likely I will be very very busy and putting in long hours at the hospital.

Knitting Knews:

I have finished a few things lately - however my cameras are still in use by a friend.  She's been trying to figure out which one she wants to buy.  So I haven't been able to take pictures yet.  But the completed projects are:

Elephant Hat

Kyle's Christmas Hat

Yellow Baby Hat

Part of a tea-pot

75% of a sweater for Riley

I will be posting photos as soon as I get my cameras back.

Have a good week.
